Saffron Sync: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed warmly at the airport in Tel Aviv by his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara Netanyahu, as the Indian PM arrived in the country for a short but highly publicized diplomatic visit on Wednesday (February 25).
The two leaders greeted each other warmly, but it was a small detail in PM Modi’s clothing that quickly made headlines on social media. Dressed in a traditional white kurta-pyjama and a sleeveless jacket, PM Modi was wearing a saffron-colored pocket square – a small detail that did not go unnoticed.
As the two leaders greeted each other, Netanyahu noticed the coincidence between Modi’s pocket square and his wife’s dress, which was also saffron-colored. “You see what she wore?” Netanyahu asked, nodding towards Sara’s dress and then Modi’s pocket square. PM Modi immediately picked up on the joke and laughed, replying, “Yes, saffron.”
The light-hearted conversation brought warmth to the welcome ceremony and soon went viral on social media platforms, with users terming it as a reflection of the personal friendship between the two leaders.
Sara Netanyahu also warmly greeted PM Modi, saying that she would like to return to India and that it is a “wonderful country.” Netanyahu was quick to praise Modi as well, saying that he “is a wonderful leader.”
Netanyahu’s diplomacy, replete with gestures, continued later in the day as he welcomed PM Modi in traditional Indian clothing before a joint dinner. The Israeli Prime Minister soon shared the video on social media platforms, further adding to the online chatter about the “bromance” between the two leaders.
Social media users widely appreciated the personal welcome accorded to PM Modi. “Netanyahu coming personally to receive is a good gesture and shows a solid relationship between the two leaders,” wrote one user. Another user commented, “From the land of saffron to the land of innovation — powerful partnership.”
Others pointed out the larger symbolism of the moment, saying that the warm moment was a symbol of the growing relationship between India and Israel. “The bromance between Netanyahu and Modi – and by extension, Israel and India – is always beautiful to see,” another comment said.
During his visit, PM Modi also spoke at Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. During his speech, Modi reiterated his country’s support for Israel in its fight against terrorism and the need for a relationship between the two countries.
The visit is yet another example of the growing relationship between India and Israel, with the saffron sync being a symbol of the human side of high-level diplomacy.
