Justice Surya Kant 53rd CJI
Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on Monday (November 24, 2025) at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath a few days after Justice Kant, a member of the 16th Presidential Reference Bench, recommended that the President and Governors are not constrained by the deadlines established by the Supreme Court in the Tamil Nadu Governor case.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta recently commended Justice Kant and former Chief Justice B.R. Gavai for incorporating more “Indianness” into court rulings by using Indian legal precedents rather than foreign ones.
On May 24, 2019, Justice Gavai and Justice Surya Kant were both appointed to the Supreme Court.
