The fall of the replica was attributed to very strong winds during the downpour. The statue, with a height of almost 40 m (114 ft), was set up in a Havan store’s parking lot. A viral video captured the statue’s upper section bending and finally toppling over as it could not withstand the powerful wind before breaking into pieces. The head of the statue sustained heavy damage. Company officials stated that only the upper 24 m of the statue fell down while the base remained unharmed. The statue had been on the site since 2020, and it had a good safety certification. According to the local authorities, there was no report of anyone getting hurt in the incident. The area was secured and emergency teams cleared the site of debris in just a few hours. The Mayor of Guaiba, Marcelo Maranata, commended the swift action taken by the rescue teams and mentioned that safety inspections were done in the adjacent zones. The meteorologists indicated that the wind was blowing at a speed of more than 90 kmph, and the first warning had already been given to the local population. The storm was not limited to Guaiba but had also affected other regions in Rio Grande do Sul, leading to fallen trees, roofs being damaged, floods, and power outages.
