Shreyas Iyer fined again as PBKS face IPL 2026 reprimand

Shreyas: Iyer penalised for slow over-rate as Punjab Kings face action after win over Chennai Super Kings

Shreyas:  The IPL 2026 continues to deliver drama both on and off the field, as Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer has once again been penalised for breaching the league’s Code of Conduct. The incident occurred during Punjab’s match against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where PBKS secured a convincing five-wicket victory.

Despite the win, disciplinary action overshadowed Punjab’s performance. Iyer was fined ₹24 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate—his second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. The rules state that repeated breaches result in stricter penalties, and Iyer’s case is a clear example of that escalation.

The repercussions were not limited to the captain alone. The entire Punjab Kings playing XI, including the Impact Player, faced financial penalties. Each member of the team was fined either ₹6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fee, whichever is lower. Such collective punishment underlines the importance the IPL Governing Council places on maintaining match discipline and adhering to time regulations.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Iyer has found himself in trouble this season. He had earlier been penalised for a similar offence during Punjab’s clash against Gujarat Titans. Repeating the mistake in consecutive matches has now put him under scrutiny, raising questions about team management and on-field execution.

However, on the cricketing front, Punjab Kings delivered a strong performance. Chasing a formidable total of 210 set by Chennai Super Kings, the team showcased composure and firepower. Iyer himself played a crucial role, scoring a brisk half-century—50 runs off just 29 balls—guiding his side to victory in 18.4 overs.

Earlier in the match, Chennai Super Kings had posted an impressive total of 209 for five. Young batter Ayush Mhatre led the charge with a well-crafted 73 off 43 balls. He was well supported by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who contributed 28 runs in a 96-run partnership that laid a solid foundation.

Late contributions from Sarfaraz Khan, who smashed 32 off just 12 balls, and Shivam Dube, who remained unbeaten on 45, helped CSK reach a competitive total at their home ground.

However, Punjab’s batting lineup rose to the challenge. Their aggressive approach ensured that the required run rate remained under control throughout the chase. The victory marked PBKS’s second consecutive win of the season, signalling a strong start to their campaign.

Yet, the slow over-rate issue has somewhat dampened the team’s momentum. Maintaining the required pace of play has been a recurring challenge for several teams in the IPL, often resulting in fines and warnings. For captains, managing bowlers, field placements, and match situations while keeping an eye on the clock can be a tricky balancing act.

For Iyer, the repeated violations could become a concern if not addressed promptly. Further breaches could lead to even harsher penalties, including possible suspension. It will be crucial for Punjab Kings to streamline their on-field processes and ensure better time management in upcoming matches.

From a broader perspective, the IPL’s strict enforcement of over-rate rules reflects its commitment to maintaining a fast-paced and viewer-friendly format. Delays not only disrupt the flow of the game but also affect broadcast schedules and fan engagement.

As the tournament progresses, Punjab Kings will aim to continue their winning streak while staying on the right side of the rules. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer will need to strike a balance between leading his team effectively and ensuring compliance with the league’s regulations.

In the end, while Punjab’s on-field success is commendable, their off-field discipline will be equally important in shaping their journey in IPL 2026.
