Karwa Chauth 2025: Date, Puja Muhurat & Moonrise Time

Must read

Karwa Chauth 2025 will be celebrated across India on Friday, October 10, marking one of the most significant Hindu festivals for married women. Falling on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of the Kartik month, this sacred occasion symbolizes love, devotion, and the enduring bond between husband and wife. On this day, married women observe a strict fast (upvas) from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the long life, health, and prosperity of their husbands.

According to Drik Panchang, the Chaturthi tithi begins at 10:54 PM on October 9 and ends at 7:38 PM on October 10, making October 10 the correct day for observing Karwa Chauth in 2025.

Karwa Chauth 2025 Moonrise and Puja Timings

This year, the Karwa Chauth Puja Muhurat will begin at 5:57 PM and end at 7:11 PM. During this period, women gather to perform the Karwa Chauth Katha and offer prayers to Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha.
The fast begins at 6:19 AM and continues until the moon is sighted and offerings are made.

The moonrise time is crucial for devotees, as it marks the moment when fasting women can finally break their day-long fast. The moon will rise at different times across Indian cities, depending on their geographical location.

City-Wise Moonrise Timings for Karwa Chauth 2025

The moonrise time for Karwa Chauth 2025 will vary across cities in India. In New Delhi, the moon will rise at 8:13 PM, which is the same for Noida, while Gurugram will see the moon a minute later at 8:14 PM. In the northern region, Chandigarh will witness the moon at 8:09 PM, and Jaipur slightly later at 8:22 PM.

In Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow will have its moonrise at 8:18 PM, Kanpur at 8:17 PM, and Varanasi at 8:05 PM. In eastern India, Patna will see the moon at 8:01 PM, while Kolkata will experience an earlier moonrise at 7:42 PM, and Guwahati even earlier at 7:50 PM.

Moving westward, Mumbai will have one of the latest moonrises at 8:55 PM, followed by Pune at 8:52 PM, Ahmedabad at 8:47 PM, and Surat at 8:49 PM. Central India’s timings include Bhopal at 8:25 PM, Indore at 8:27 PM, Nagpur at 8:30 PM, and Raipur at 8:32 PM.

In South India, Chennai will see the moon at 8:38 PM, Hyderabad at 8:36 PM, Bengaluru at 8:48 PM, Thiruvananthapuram at 8:20 PM, and Kochi at 8:24 PM. Meanwhile, in the north, Srinagar will witness the moonrise at 7:58 PM.

For devotees in Delhi, the moonrise at 8:13 PM will mark the time to end the fast, after performing the traditional rituals of offering water (Arghya) to the moon and seeking blessings for their spouses.

These regional differences highlight how geography influences moon visibility across India. Women observing the fast can refer to these timings to know when to conclude their Karwa Chauth rituals and break their fast after sighting the moon.

When to Break the Karwa Chauth Fast

Women can break their fast after sighting the moon and offering water (Arghya) through a sieve or dupatta to their husbands. Traditionally, the ritual includes viewing the moon through a sieve, then looking at the husband’s face as part of the blessing ceremony. The fast is then broken with water and sweets offered by the husband, marking the completion of this sacred day.

Significance of Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth is celebrated mainly in North India, especially in states like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Rajasthan. The festival not only signifies marital devotion but also strengthens emotional bonds between couples.
Women dress in vibrant ethnic attire, apply mehendi, wear solah shringar (sixteen adornments), and exchange gifts with family and friends.

Over time, Karwa Chauth has taken on a modern dimension, with many couples now observing the fast together as a symbol of equality and shared love. Social media becomes vibrant with festive greetings, photos, and creative expressions of devotion that beautifully blend tradition and modernity.

Astronomical and Cultural Context

Astronomically, the moonrise varies each year due to changes in the lunar orbit and the Earth’s rotation. In 2025, the moonrise — between 7:40 PM and 8:55 PM in most Indian cities — indicates slightly longer fasting hours. Yet, devotees embrace the challenge as part of their faith and dedication.

As India prepares to celebrate this festival of love, the Karwa Chauth moon will once again shine as a symbol of commitment, endurance, and blessings — illuminating the hearts of millions across the country.
