Kartik Sharma rises from hardship to shine with Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026
Kartik Sharma: Not all tales of cricket are those of runs and wickets. One story of such magnitude belongs to Kartik Sharma who has gone from struggles to become one of the most exciting young cricketers in the Indian Premier League.
Kartik Sharma was born on 26 April 2006 in Bharatpur. The boy had a difficult childhood because his father, Manoj Sharma, who played medium pace, could not pursue his cricketing career owing to a shoulder injury. In order for him not to repeat his father’s story, Manoj made sure that Kartik would succeed.
Realizing the boy’s potential, Manoj Sharma took the decision to send Kartik to the famous cricketer, Lokendra Singh Chahar who was the father of Deepak Chahar, an Indian pacer.
Sacrifices behind the dream
However, Kartik’s career is as much about fighting as talent. The parents have sacrificed everything they possessed to nurture Kartik’s cricket career. The family sold their farmland located in their native village Bahnera. The mother, Radha, even gave away her jewelry pieces to meet Kartik’s needs. The father took a loan of nearly ₹26–28 lakh to support his son’s training expenses, transportation, and cricket gear.
There was one episode from Gwalior where he participated in a tournament. Due to lack of finances, Manoj had planned on participating in a few games. However, as the team kept advancing in the tournament, they exhausted their savings. In the absence of money, father and son stayed at a shelter for one night. On returning from the tournament, Kartik had won the last match and earned some prize money.
Thus, such incidents made him resilient and determined.
A journey full of setbacks
Although Kartik started off strong and was selected by Rajasthan at the Under-14 and Under-16 level, he went through four years in which he did not get any call-ups to the next level. But unlike most, Kartik kept working hard, keeping himself fit and playing domestic games.
Kartik’s luck changed during a domestic game in Jaipur when he had to make a late entry into the game. Seizing this opportunity, he managed to score 60 runs off just 20 balls. This performance caught the eye of Vikas Yadav, an individual who was running Aravali Cricket Club. He gave Kartik a chance to play in the club.
Kartik moved to Jaipur when he was only 14 years old and started showing exceptional performance in the Aravali Premier League.
Rise through the ranks
Kartik’s consistent performance brought him to the Rajasthan’s Under-19 team, where he went on to become its captain. A notable performance for Kartik includes his scoring of a double century in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and establishing himself as an emerging cricketer.
Kartik’s move to seniors was not much different from that of his transition to Under-19s. His performance in his Ranji Trophy debut in November 2025 included him scoring 113 runs against Uttarakhand.
His domestic records further establish his caliber. He has scored 479 runs in 8 games in first class cricket, which includes three centuries. In List-A cricket, he has managed to score 445 runs in 9 games, with an average of more than 55 runs per game. In T20 cricket, his striking rate is about 163 runs and he has hit 28 sixes in 12 games.
IPL breakthrough
This breakthrough for Kartik occurred when the Chennai Super Kings signed him up at an eye-watering salary of ₹14.2 crore, putting him among the costliest uncapped players in IPL history. This fee not only reflected his capabilities but also his remarkable progress.
His first appearance in the IPL was against Rajasthan Royals, coming in at a difficult time when his side were at 19-3. While he managed to score 18 runs in 15 balls, he displayed his cool temperament in a high-pressure situation.
More than just a cricketer
Kartik Sharma’s tale does not end with just cricket; it is a story of resilience, dedication, and hope. His life from being hungry in shelter homes to earning crores in the most prestigious arena will inspire many budding cricketers of India.
As IPL 2026 takes place, the spotlight will be on this young man. Though his career is only getting started, there is no doubt that Kartik Sharma is someone whose name will be ringing around for a long time in Indian cricket.
