Iran-US Tension:The Government of India has come out with a new advisory asking Indian citizens in Iran to leave the country by available means of transport, such as commercial flights, in view of the rising tensions in the region and the possibility of US strikes in the coming days.
In its latest advisory issued on January 14, 2026, the Embassy of India, Tehran reiterated that all Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) in Iran, including students, pilgrims, businessmen, and tourists, should exercise caution and consider leaving the country at the earliest opportunity.
The advisory specifically asked Indian citizens to avoid zones of protests or demonstrations, remain in regular touch with the Indian Embassy, and follow local media reports. Citizens have also been advised to have their travel and immigration documents, such as passports and identity papers, easily accessible at all times.
Protests Intensify in Iran
The advisory comes as anti-government protests continue to break out in Iran. The protests began after 40-day memorials for people who were killed during anti-government protests in January. Iran’s state media reported that protests were seen at universities in the capital city of Tehran, as well as Mashhad.
Videos posted online showed crowds of people chanting and gathering at universities, including reported protests at Sharif University.
US-Iran Nuclear Talks and Military Movements
However, the situation has continued to deteriorate due to delicate diplomatic processes. The United States and Iran are set to engage in another round of nuclear negotiations in Geneva, as confirmed by Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr al-Busaidi. Oman had previously facilitated an indirect negotiation process between the two countries on Iran’s nuclear program.
On a different note, the administration of former US President Donald Trump has been observed to have intensified the movement of military aircraft towards the Middle East. Flight tracking information has revealed the transportation of personnel, equipment, and weapons to the region, thus underlining the precarious nature of the negotiations.
In light of the dynamic security situation, the Indian government has advised its citizens to exercise caution and remain alert. The Embassy has, however, assured its citizens of all possible assistance in case of a need for evacuation.
