New Delhi was the scene of political drama on Monday (August 11, 2025) as MPs from the INDIA bloc staged a protest march from Parliament House to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters. The demonstration was aimed at opposing the recently passed Special Investigation Regulation (SIR), the voter roll revision in Bihar, and alleged “vote chori” in recent polls.
Among the participants were Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The march was halted midway by Delhi Police, who had set up barricades to prevent the MPs from proceeding further.
When stopped, several MPs sat on the road, chanting slogans against the EC. Women MPs, including TMC’s Mahua Moitra and Congress leaders Sanjana Jatav and Jothimani, climbed over the barricades, raising slogans before being detained.
Police escorted the detained MPs into buses lined along the road, taking them to Parliament Street Police Station. They were released later in the day.
The opposition accused the government and the EC of trying to manipulate electoral rolls in Bihar to favor the ruling party, calling it a direct attack on free and fair elections. The police defended their actions, citing the need to maintain law and order in the high-security zone.
Later in the evening, Congress president Kharge was scheduled to host a dinner meeting with INDIA bloc MPs to discuss a joint strategy against the alleged poll fraud. The opposition alliance vowed to raise the issue both in Parliament and before the public.
