Holika Dahan 2026: Correct Date, Bhadra-Free Muhurat and Spiritual Significance

Choti Holi will be observed on March 2, 2026, when devotees will perform the sacred ritual of Holika Dahan. The main festival of Holi will be celebrated on March 4, 2026 as the festival of colours across India. Choti Holi is celebrated one day before Holi and holds deep religious and spiritual importance in Hindu tradition.

The day is marked by lighting a sacred bonfire during an auspicious muhurat. This ritual symbolises the triumph of good over evil and the destruction of negative energies.

Correct Date and Tithi

  • Holika Dahan / Choti Holi: March 2, 2026

  • Purnima Tithi Begins: March 2, 2026 at 05:55 PM

  • Purnima Tithi Ends: March 3, 2026 at 05:07 PM

Holika Dahan is performed on the night of Phalguna Purnima. However, it must be conducted during a Bhadra-free period, as Bhadra Kaal is considered inauspicious for performing the ritual.

The Bhadra period is not suitable for religious ceremonies, including Holika Dahan.

  • Bhadra Begins: March 2, 2026 at 05:58 PM

  • Bhadra Ends: March 3, 2026 at 05:30 AM

Since Bhadra continues throughout the night of March 2, devotees must wait until it ends. The most auspicious time to perform Holika Dahan is between 5:30 AM and 6:23 AM on March 3, 2026. Performing the ritual during this muhurat is believed to bring positivity and divine blessings.

Spiritual Significance of Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan represents the eternal victory of good over evil. The festival is based on the legend of Prahlad and Holika. Prahlad was a devoted follower of Vishnu. Despite several attempts by his father, Hiranyakashipu, to harm him, Prahlad remained safe because of his strong faith in Lord Vishnu.

Holika, the sister of Hiranyakashipu, had a boon that made her immune to fire. She tried to burn Prahlad by sitting with him in a blazing fire. However, due to her evil intentions, she was burned to ashes, while Prahlad survived unharmed. This event symbolises that evil is ultimately destroyed, while faith and righteousness are protected.

On this day, devotees pray for protection, prosperity, happiness, and the removal of negativity from their lives. Families gather around the bonfire, perform parikrama, offer sacred items like rice, cloves, mustard seeds, dry coconut, and camphor into the fire, and chant mantras for health and well-being.

Holika Dahan marks the spiritual beginning of Holi and reminds everyone that truth and goodness always triumph over evil.
