Shimla, India | August 24, 2025 — China has agreed in principle to resume trade with India through the Shipki-La border, the Himachal Pradesh government announced on Monday. The agreement comes following discussions during the recent visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to India, signaling a positive development in bilateral trade relations.
According to the State government, Beijing has also given a favorable response to restarting the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Shipki-La, which has been a longstanding demand of pilgrims and local authorities. Officials stated that both countries are now exploring the logistical and procedural framework needed to implement these initiatives effectively.
This decision is expected to boost trade and economic activity in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in border districts that have faced disruptions due to the temporary closure of the Shipki-La route. Local traders and communities are optimistic that resuming cross-border trade will strengthen ties, increase commerce, and improve livelihoods in the region.
Officials emphasized that further details regarding the schedule, customs procedures, and safety measures for both trade and pilgrimage routes will be shared once final agreements are formalized between the two governments.
