Bangladesh Election Results 2026: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending congratulations to party chairperson Tarique Rahman, who won resoundingly in Bangladesh’s 2026 parliamentary election results. BNP says this is an indication of good intentions and will possibly strengthen relations between India and Bangladesh with the new leadership. National polls, conducted on February 12, 2026, marked the country’s first general election since the political transition of 2024 involving the previous PM, Sheikh Hasina. Preliminary election returns showed the BNP-led coalition obtaining a commanding majority, garnering over 200 seats in the run for the 300-seat Jatiya Sangsad, and opening the way for Tarique Rahman’s return through the portals of office after a long exile of nearly 17 years. In an announcement on X, the PM Modi congratulated Rahman on winning the elections, observing, “This electoral mandate is an endorsement of the firm faith that the people of Bangladesh have in my leadership.” Modi, in the announcement, also reassured people that India is committed to helping Bangladeshi people achieve a “democratic, progressive, and inclusive nation,” besides hoping for stronger cooperation in development issues. As political analysts have realized, this might have significant implications for diplomatic relations and economic cooperation at both the regional and national levels, with both countries likely to focus on trade and security cooperation in the coming period.
