Amrit Bharat Express coaches feature modern colours, PVC flooring, and enhanced safety for better passenger experience
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently inspected a sample coach of the next-generation Amrit Bharat Express at New Delhi Railway Station, marking a significant push towards modernising India’s passenger rail experience. The upgraded coaches reflect a strong focus on passenger comfort, improved safety, and enhanced visual appeal.
One of the standout features of the redesigned coaches is the use of modern colour themes. From seating areas to berths, snack tables, curtains, and even toilet interiors, a coordinated design approach has been adopted to create a visually cohesive and pleasant environment for travellers. The use of PVC flooring and rexine seat berths further adds to durability while maintaining a clean and contemporary look.
The Railway Minister highlighted that these upgraded coaches are part of a broader effort to improve safety and convenience for passengers. According to him, existing coach models have been redesigned with better amenities, including improved toilet facilities and more efficient layouts. The initiative aims to elevate the travel experience without significantly increasing ticket prices, ensuring affordability remains intact.
Safety remains a key pillar of the redesign. All materials used in the new coaches comply with HL3 fire safety standards, which is the highest classification under European railway safety norms (EN 45545-2). This ensures maximum resistance to fire, minimal smoke emission, and reduced toxicity levels, significantly enhancing onboard safety for passengers.
Beyond aesthetics and safety, the coaches are designed for long-term practicality. Materials have been chosen to ensure durability and ease of maintenance, helping Indian Railways sustain quality over time. The improved interiors are expected to withstand heavy usage while retaining their modern appeal.
Indian Railways introduced Amrit Bharat trains as a new category of long-distance passenger services aimed primarily at non-AC travellers. Positioned as an upgrade over traditional mail and express trains, these services are designed to offer better comfort and reliability on high-demand routes.
The trains come equipped with a range of modern features, including CCTV cameras, LED lighting, mobile charging points, and bio-vacuum toilets. Additional enhancements such as floor-guide fluorescent strips, wider gangways, and improved coupling systems contribute to a smoother, jerk-free journey. Safety features like aerosol-based fire suppression systems and emergency disaster management lights further strengthen passenger security.
While not positioned as premium or high-speed services, Amrit Bharat trains represent a major step forward in improving everyday rail travel in India. By combining modern design, enhanced safety, and practical functionality, these trains aim to deliver a more comfortable and dependable experience for millions of passengers across the country.
