Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated annually on 14 April to mark the birthday of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, a great leader, philosopher, and social reformer of India. This year, the country honors the birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar by commemorating his 135th birth anniversary.
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution and fought hard to promote social justice and equality in society. He was born in 1891 in Mhow (now known as Madhya Pradesh). Throughout his childhood, he suffered extreme discrimination because of the prevalent caste system in the country. However, despite all adversities, he strived hard and succeeded in achieving his educational goals. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar attended prestigious institutes like Columbia University and the London School of Economics.
Ambedkar was not just a lawyer, but he was a social reformer who dedicated his life to fighting against caste discrimination and untouchability. He firmly believed that the process of social reform can be initiated only when one becomes aware through proper education and awareness. He made relentless efforts towards improving the lives of the underprivileged section, including Dalits. As a result, there were many social reforms as well as laws enacted that provided the right to Dalits and others.
In the whole country, Ambedkar Jayanti is observed with much fervor and enthusiasm. Floral offerings are made to Dr. Ambedkar’s statue at many places. One such place that witnesses a large number of people paying their tribute is Chaitya Bhoomi. Seminars, discussions, cultural shows, and processions are some of the important events that take place during the celebration of this day.

Special events including essay writing contests and debate sessions are conducted in the premises of schools and colleges. They also organize special seminars for discussing the principles advocated by Dr. Ambedkar such as education, equality, social justice, and others. His famous phrase, “educate, agitate, organize,” encourages millions of people across the globe for attaining equality, liberty, and justice.
This day not only commemorates the contributions made by Babasaheb but is also used to reflect upon the core values that he promoted among people. Liberty, fraternity, justice, and equality are some of the most important principles that find mention in the Indian constitution drafted under his guidance. His tireless struggle resulted in the provision of equal rights to every citizen irrespective of their caste, creed, and religion.
Modern-day India is grappling with many challenges relating to disparity and discrimination against certain sections of society. In such circumstances, Dr. B.R.
