Rampal the head of the Satlok Ashram has received significant relief after spending over eleven years in jail. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted bail to Rampal in a sedition case. This verdict comes at a time when Rampal had been incarcerated for a prolonged period and hearings in several cases against him were ongoing. This decision has brought joy to his supporters and they are now awaiting further developments in the legal process.
Rampal has been in jail for approximately eleven years, four months and twenty days. During this period he was serving a life sentence and making court appearances in connection with various cases. Currently he remains lodged in Hisar Central Jail. After a protracted legal battle he has found substantial relief following the grant of bail in the sedition case. Whether his release will be immediate or not will depend on the subsequent legal procedures and the specific conditions imposed.
What was the entire case about?
The entire case stems from a dispute that occurred in 2014 at the Satlok Ashram located in Barwala in the Hisar district of Haryana. At that time a violent clash erupted between the police and the ashram’s followers. The situation deteriorated to such an extent that tension spread across the entire region becoming a subject of nationwide discussion. The matter escalated further when six people lost their lives during the police operation and subsequent skirmishes.
Rampal was arrested on November 19, 2014. He had been ordered to appear in court but failed to comply with the directive. Subsequently the police launched a massive operation to apprehend him. During this operation the Satlok Ashram was cordoned off an event that captured the attention of the entire nation.
Following his arrest cases were registered against Rampal under several serious charges including sedition. Additionally a case of contempt of court was pending against him. The police and investigative agencies gathered extensive evidence in this matter and presented it before the court. After lengthy hearings, he was convicted and sentenced in certain cases resulting in his continued incarceration.
With the High Court granting him bail in the sedition case his legal situation has become somewhat less arduous. However the specific conditions under which he will be released from jail remain unclear at this juncture. Adherence to the court’s conditions will be mandatory for him. The ongoing hearings in other cases will also have a bearing on his situation.
This verdict has once again brought the issue of Satlok Ashram and Rampal back into the spotlight. While his supporters are hailing this as a victory for justice, on the other hand numerous questions surrounding this case still remain unanswered. When and how Rampal’s release will take place will be determined by legal stipulations in the days to come.
