LPG cylinders: The Government of India has taken up a new project aimed at enhancing access to cooking fuels by making 5 kg LPG cylinders available over the counter from distributors. Through its Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the government is ensuring that all those in need of affordable fuels have access to LPG cylinders. As a result of the new development, consumers will now be able to get access to 5 kg cylinders by simply producing an ID proof of any kind. Consumers no longer have to register themselves for getting cylinders, nor do they have to undergo cumbersome processes like booking cylinders and then waiting for their arrival. The new system introduced by the Indian government will be beneficial for migrant laborers, daily wage earners, small households, and even street vendors who need portable and inexpensive LPG cylinders. The project has been successful in terms of gaining public support since 6.6 lakh cylinders have been bought since it was launched on March 23.
It should be noted that the use of smaller cylinder sizes, especially when considering the availability of clean cooking fuel across various areas, was viewed by the government as a step in ensuring energy accessibility, among other measures to improve its distribution system. Firstly, it is much easier to buy, sell, and transport these smaller cylinders due to lower cost and weight. Secondly, people can buy them based on their current needs, thus minimizing financial expenses. The importance of buying small cylinders is especially relevant for poorer families who cannot afford to pay for bigger ones right away. Lastly, this decision can contribute to furthering the government policy of promoting cleaner energy sources and encouraging individuals not to use firewood, coal, and kerosene any longer because they are inefficient and unhealthy. At present, it is believed that the authorities are providing a sufficient number of 5-kg cylinders to distributors and monitor their distribution to avoid any problems and provide citizens with clean cooking fuel in a timely manner.
In addition to the benefits mentioned above, this move would have a positive effect on the overall health status and quality of life of the Indian population, especially in rural and semi-urban regions, where access to fuel for cooking purposes was limited until now. For example, the portability of the five-kilogram cylinders would be beneficial for households that do not have a stable place of residence or people who often change their jobs and places of work. Moreover, the initiative would help solve the problem of fuel consumption faced by small businesses like tea kiosks, street vendors, and other food service establishments. By making the purchase process easier and providing equal opportunities to access vital resources, the Indian government takes a step towards inclusive development and meets the needs of all members of the population, regardless of their socio-economic status. The success of this campaign is an indicator of its usefulness and relevance, which means that it will become a cornerstone for fuel supply and distribution in the future.
