A sudden change in weather conditions has been observed across Delhi-NCR as the impact of a fresh Western Disturbance brought rain, strong winds, and dust storms early Friday morning. Residents woke up to cloudy skies, gusty winds, and a noticeable dip in temperature, marking a shift from the recent spell of heat in the region.
According to the India Meteorological Department, light rainfall accompanied by winds blowing at speeds of 20–40 kmph is expected to continue through Friday and Saturday. A Yellow Alert has also been issued for Saturday, warning residents to remain cautious of sudden weather changes, especially strong winds and localized dust storms.
The capital city, New Delhi, along with surrounding NCR areas, witnessed dust-laden winds that reduced visibility in several places. The sun remained largely obscured throughout the morning as thick cloud cover dominated the sky. This sudden shift in weather is primarily attributed to the Western Disturbance affecting northwestern parts of India.
Weather experts have indicated that this pattern is likely to persist for the next few days, with intermittent rain showers and cloudy conditions expected till April 8. The ongoing system is also expected to bring a noticeable drop in temperatures after a brief rise in the next 24 hours.
The IMD has stated that maximum temperatures in Delhi-NCR may initially increase by 1–2 degrees Celsius, but a subsequent fall of 2–4 degrees is expected as the weather system strengthens. On Thursday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8°C, which was 2.8 degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature stood at 18.9°C, slightly above average.
Humidity levels in the region have fluctuated significantly, ranging between 89 percent and 33 percent, contributing to the discomfort experienced by residents. However, with the arrival of rain and winds, relief from the prevailing heat conditions is anticipated.
Wind speeds are expected to intensify further, reaching up to 30–50 kmph on April 3 and 4. These strong winds could lead to minor disruptions, including falling tree branches, dust storms, and reduced visibility, particularly in open areas and highways. Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors during peak wind activity and avoid unnecessary travel.
In addition, the IMD has also forecast the arrival of another Western Disturbance over northwest India starting April 7. This new system is likely to further influence weather conditions in Delhi-NCR, potentially extending the period of rain and cooler temperatures.
For Friday, the weather department has predicted partly cloudy skies with chances of light rain and moderate winds ranging between 20–30 kmph. The maximum temperature is expected to hover between 32–34°C, while the minimum may remain between 20–22°C.
The sudden weather shift comes as a welcome relief for many residents who had been experiencing rising temperatures over the past few days. However, the accompanying dust storms and strong winds also pose challenges, especially for commuters and those with respiratory conditions.
Overall, the current weather pattern highlights the dynamic nature of pre-summer conditions in north India, where Western Disturbances often bring temporary relief from heat but also cause short-term disruptions. Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather advisories and take necessary precautions during this period of fluctuating conditions.
