Remembering the sacrifice of three young revolutionaries who shaped India’s freedom struggle.
Shaheed Diwas is celebrated every year on March 23 with the aim of paying tribute to the supreme sacrifice made by three of India’s most iconic revolutionaries, namely Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Rajguru Shivaram. The execution of these three revolutionaries by the British colonial government in 1931 was one of the most defining moments of India’s fight for independence, which still evokes a lot of emotions even today, almost a century later.
These young revolutionaries were affiliated with the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association, a political organization that advocated armed resistance against the British colonial government. While the movement of other Indian revolutionaries was non-violent, the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association wanted to awaken the masses through direct action. Amongst the three, Bhagat Singh emerged as a powerful intellectual who wanted a socialist India free from British rule. Sukhdev played a major role in organizing revolutionary activities, while Rajguru was known for his bravery during armed resistance.
Their names became widely known after they were involved in the assassination of British officer John Saunders in 1928. The reason behind this assassination was the death of the nationalist leader, Lala Lajpat Rai, who died after being subjected to a brutal lathi charge by the police while protesting against the formation of the Simon Commission. The assassination, therefore, was not just an act of revenge, but it was a symbolic protest against British rule.
After this incident, Bhagat Singh and his associates were arrested and charged in what came to be known as the Lahore Conspiracy Case. The case attracted massive attention from the people across the country. During this time, Bhagat Singh used this opportunity to express his revolutionary ideas in the courtroom, calling for justice and freedom, which greatly resonated with the youth, making him a hero.
Yet, the British authorities did not show any leniency, even with the widespread demonstrations of protest, appeals for clemency, and growing public support for the trio. On March 23, 1931, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were hanged at Lahore Central Jail. It has been reported that their execution was carried out ahead of schedule, possibly to prevent public disturbances. The bodies of the trio were cremated at a location near the Sutlej River, which added fuel to the anger of the Indian people.
The martyrdom of the three revolutionaries created a major stir across the country, giving a tremendous boost to the freedom movement. The trio’s martyrdom acted as a symbol of motivation for the millions of Indians who were fighting for their freedom at that time. They symbolized fearless resistance, youthfulness, and unwavering commitment to their country.
Today, Shaheed Diwas is celebrated not only to remember these martyrs but also to think about the values they stood by. The courage they showed, their sacrifices, and their patriotism are celebrated in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions across India. Their stories are told to remind the people of India about the price they paid to gain their freedom.
On the occasion of Shaheed Diwas 2026 in India, the legacy of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru is still alive. Their ideology is still alive and inspiring people to fight against injustice and strive to make India a better place.
