Youth Congress President Uday Bhanu Chib Arrested in Connection with Shirtless Demonstration at Bharat Mandapa
Uday Bhanu Chib, the national president of the Indian Youth Congress, has been arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with the shirtless protest that took place during the AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This is the eighth arrest made in the case so far.
According to police sources, Chib was interrogated for almost 15 to 20 hours at the Tilak Marg police station before he was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday. Sources revealed that he was arrested around 4:30 am. The police claimed that he did not cooperate with them during the interrogation and tried to deceive them. They also stated that they have enough evidence to prove his involvement in the protest.
Chib has been charged with criminal conspiracy, voluntarily causing harm to a public servant, obstructing a public servant on duty, and wilful disobedience. He was later produced in court and has been sent to four days of police custody.
The protest occurred during the recently held AI Impact Summit, where slogans were allegedly raised against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), condemned the protest. The BJP spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawalla, called the protest “characterless, brainless, and emotionless” and claimed that the Congress party is protesting against the achievements of India. He added that the summit has received appreciation from world leaders and tech CEOs such as Sam Altman and Sundar Pichai.
The Youth Congress has defended the protest and claimed that it was peaceful and conducted to highlight issues related to the government. The Youth Congress national general secretary, Sheh Narayan Ojha, said that the protest was conducted to highlight concerns about the “compromised” prime minister. She also claimed that party members have been subjected to police action during previous protests.
The situation has escalated the political rivalry between the Congress and the BJP.
