Must read

Modi–Macron Mumbai: The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, engaged in high-level bilateral discussions in Mumbai, which marked a major milestone in the development of the strategic partnership between India and France. The bilateral discussion brought together high-ranking officials, businessmen, and advisors from both countries, which indicated the widening areas of cooperation that go beyond the usual diplomatic channels. President Macron is on a three-day visit to India, and his engagement in Mumbai marked the beginning of a new era of cooperation in the fields of defense, technology, trade, and innovation.

The French President has landed in Mumbai along with the First Lady, Brigitte Macron, and has received a ceremonial welcome from state officials at the international airport. This is Macron’s fourth visit to India, and he has chosen to make Mumbai his first destination, which is significant as it is the financial capital of India. According to officials from both countries, the visit is important as it comes after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to France and a time when the geopolitical and economic environment is changing rapidly. The talks have covered people-to-people ties, investments, and educational exchanges.

Cooperation in the defence sector has also been identified as one of the key pillars of the dialogue. India has recently approved a large defence acquisition deal that includes the acquisition of new-generation Rafale fighter jets from France, making it one of the largest aircraft deals in the country’s history. The approval is part of a multi-trillion-rupee defence modernization plan that aims to boost the capabilities of the country’s defence forces. Experts have pointed out that the acquisition not only boosts the country’s aerial defence capabilities but also cements long-term defence partnerships with France. Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a stable and secure Indo-Pacific region through joint strategic efforts.

Innovation and emerging technologies were another major focus area of the Mumbai agenda. The two leaders jointly launched the India-France Year of Innovation 2026, which aims to facilitate innovation partnerships between startups, research organizations, universities, and companies. Artificial Intelligence, renewable energy solutions, digital infrastructure, space technology, and manufacturing were identified as the priority areas for innovation partnerships. Business forums and networking events were also organized on the side lines of the talks, where entrepreneurs and innovators from both countries could discuss potential funding and partnership opportunities. According to officials, this innovation initiative is expected to create jobs and drive technological advancements in the coming years.
