PM Modi in South Africa at the G20 Summit 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in South Africa on Friday for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, he was greeted warmly and colorfully. When a traditional cultural group performed at the airport, its members bowed honorably. In addition to the BRICS Summits in 2018 and 2023, as well as a bilateral visit in 2016, this is PM Modi’s fourth official visit to South Africa.

The G20 Summit this year is especially important because it will be held in the Global South for the fourth time in a row, after Indonesia (2022), India (2023), and Brazil (2024). This meeting is made even more significant by South Africa’s official assumption of the G20 presidency for 2025.

Additionally, PM Modi met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on a bilateral basis on Friday. The two leaders reviewed current developments in their strategic partnership and talked about important areas of cooperation.

The United States will not be present at this year’s summit, which brings together world leaders in Johannesburg. In addition to announcing a boycott of the event, former President Donald Trump reiterated his contentious and hotly debated allegations that South Africa discriminates against its white Afrikaner population.
