India Win Oval Thriller, Series Drawn 2-2 vs England

Must read

The Oval, London | August 4, 2025

India pulled off a sensational comeback victory in the 5th Test against England at The Oval, winning the match by just 6 runs to level the five-match Test series 2-2. In a game that will go down as one of the most thrilling finishes in Test cricket history, Mohammed Siraj led the charge with a stunning five-wicket haul, dismantling England’s middle and lower order on the final day.

A Historic Finish at The Oval

England, chasing 374 for victory, began the final day on 332/7, needing only 35 more runs. The match looked firmly in England’s grip with Harry Brook unbeaten and in sublime form. But Siraj had other plans. He removed Brook early on Day 5 and triggered a collapse that saw the final three English wickets fall for just 28 runs. Siraj finished with 5/92, while Prasidh Krishna took 4 wickets, providing relentless support.

This incredible win meant India not only leveled the series 2-2, but also retained the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, named after legends James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar.

Series Recap and Turning Points

India had their back against the wall after defeats in the 1st and 4th Tests, but bounced back with hard-fought wins in the 3rd and 5th. The pivotal moment in this final Test came late on Day 4, when Prasidh Krishna dismissed Joe Root (105) and Ben Foakes, halting England’s momentum.

Despite being behind on the first innings (India: 285, England: 298), India’s second innings total of 360, built around gritty partnerships and lower-order contributions, set England a challenging target of 374. On a pitch that began to offer reverse swing and variable bounce, India’s bowlers made every run count.

Shubman Gill’s Leadership Comes Through

With Rohit Sharma unavailable, Shubman Gill stepped in as stand-in captain and impressed with calm leadership under pressure. His proactive field placements, bowling changes, and confidence in Siraj and Krishna were crucial in defending a modest target in hostile English conditions.

Gill remarked after the win:

“We always believed. This team never gives up. Full credit to the bowlers — they were phenomenal today.”

Mohammed Siraj: Player of the Match

Siraj’s five-wicket haul will be remembered as one of the finest performances by an Indian pacer on English soil. His ability to attack the stumps and extract reverse swing under pressure made all the difference.

“It’s the best moment of my career so far. England were cruising, but we never stopped believing,” said Siraj post-match.
