The Lok Sabha has passed the new Income Tax Bill, significantly broadening the powers of income tax officials. The legislation now allows officials to forcibly access personal emails and social media accounts of assessees during search operations.
This controversial provision aims to strengthen tax investigations and curb tax evasion by enabling authorities to gather digital evidence more effectively. However, it has also raised privacy concerns among civil rights activists and legal experts.
Supporters argue that such powers are necessary to keep pace with modern digital communication, while critics fear potential misuse and infringement of privacy rights.
The Bill will now move to the Rajya Sabha for further consideration.
